I have a Herinated disc in S1 and L5. I am in so much pain with my right leg due to the pressure on the stalic nerve. I have had steriod shots in my back 3 times to reduce the swelling and help with the pain. They have not worked. They are talking surgery, but I have heard so many people say that it never helped and laid them up for long periods of time. I can not afford that. If anyone else has this problem, please tell me what you did to relieve this pain. This is very terrible pain which has affected my daily living. Thank you.

Have you been to physical therapy? I recommend you follow up with someone with MDT (aka the "McKenzie Method") or manual therapy experience...make sure you ask specifically...
Therapsists without MDT experience tend to presribe "stabilization" exercises, which is fine, but does nothing to change the position of the disc.
