In hospitals & medical centres, they ask you to...?

...turn your cell phone off. Why? Is there an actual danger to patients\staff if left turned on, or do hospitals\medical centres just find them annoying?
(Just curious; I don't want to cause a problem! Thank You for Responding!)

Later Daze! =)

Answer:
They can interfere with some of the medical equipment being used on patients. Also they want to keep noise down as much as possible. And here is a star from me to you !
There have been cases of cell phones interfering with IV pumps and ventilators which can cause harm to patients.
There used to be interference from cells etc, but now there is usually no harm caused by using electronic gadgets, with the newer equipment but some hospitals still have the signs up. Even airplanes will now allow them
