Charlie Horses?
Answer:
You are probably deficient in potassium, calcium, magnesium or Vitamin B6.
Sometimes this spasm is caused by dehydration. You can try to drink plenty of water. Massage the area and gently stretch it. If you are used to exercise and never had this problem before it could be a potassium shortage. It is not a health warning sign.
I agree with lestermount. The first thing to do is drink enough water until you have to pee. That is the first sign that you are hydrated back to where you need to be.
A "Charlie Horse" is a muscle spasm, usually caused by a buildup of waste called Lactic Acid. This is where hydration will come in handy. The water will help flush away the Lactic Acid from the area so it doesn't get concentrated.
But you may also be trying to use a muscle without having enough proper nutrients in your system. You need plenty of Calcium for muscle contractions. You need some Sodium and some Potassium as well. You should also have some Phosphorus too.
The main one is Calcium. However, you cannot add calcium to your diet without adding Vitamin D. Your body cannot handle (i.e. grab hold of) the Calcium without Vit. D. So take the two together. You may want to start taking a multivitamin with your breakfast.
