Why does our funny bone feel so odd when we hit it?
Answer:
Not only is it not funny, it's not even a bone. Along the upper arm bone, there is a nerve that runs underneath the arm. When it reaches the elbow, the nerve is very close to the skin. When you bump your elbow, you hit the nerve, and that is why it hurts. The upper arm, where the nerve is, has a big bone called the humerus bone. The name of the bone is Psalms the same as the word humorous, which means funny. People used to believe that it was the "humorous" bone that hurt when it was hit, so it got the nickname the funny bone.
no, there's a nerve running right over the outside of the elbow
more exposed - less fat plus skin there
It's a nerve (the ulnar nerve), and its one of the only major exposed nerves. When you hit it, it basically gets confused.
Why is it called funny, when its painful?
Not my idea of fun!
It's because when you hit it you hit your elbow and you also hit some nerves which are on your elbow that's why it feels funny.
It is not a bone, the funny bone is actually the Ulnar nerve. It is unique because it is the only nerve not protected by extensive layers of tissue. As such, jamming it is unpleasant.
It's a nerve, not a bone that makes the feeling.
thats why its called the funny bone
Dont hit it then?
It is called the funny bone because its anatomical name 'the humerous' sounds like humorous. The ulnar nerve runs over the elbow over bone with no muscle overlying it. It is thus relatively unprotected and when knocked produces a non-specific and somewhat nauseating pain response.

the funny thing about a funny bone is that when you hit it... it's not funny. LOL. My judo teacher always says that. LMAO.
its a nerve, that when we hit makes us feel that the arm has gone funny.
more to the point, whys it called a funny bone. nowt funny about bumping it
It!s only funny when it!s somebody Else's that gets whacked.
It's called the funny bone, because the bone connecting your arm to your elbow is called the humorous, and it hurts more because it has a nerve nearer the skin and it's this that gets bumped.
coz u are a dumb asss
this is such a freak questiob i have ever heard..please dont ask why do we die if we r killed.
The nerve thing has been explained. As for the name; it's a pun. The bone in the upper arm is the humerus, which sounds like 'humourous'.
there is nothing funny about it at all it hurts,,,,its because the bone you clout is called "The Humurous"thas why its called your funny bone
No, - it ISN'T "DIFFERENT", from other bones, - but there IS a reason, why it feels so ODD, when it gets HIT!
That is because there is a NERVE, which runs very CLOSE to it, - it's THAT, - not the compound upon the BONE, which make you feel "FUNNY", - hence, "FUNNY BONE"!
i dunno but i hate that
If you have any kellog's codes canu pls email the to me at hipeopleoftheworld@hotmail.com
There is a nerve running close to the skin. If you hit that, you are quite right, its not funny at all as I have found to my cost on a few occasions!!
Hi
the nerves in the elbow are receptors, which pass a signal to the brain when any elbow is knocked. The funny painful sensation you feel are the brains wave lengths being sent a shock message from the elbow receptors.Hope this helps to explain
Some people think that its because you hit the end of your upper arm bone (humerus - like humourous, as in funny) but in fact the sensation comes from the nerve (ulnar nerve) which passes over the elbow at the top of the ulna bone, where there's not usually much fat to protect it.
Because it has no concept of the "humorous".
Actually, it's because the flesh around your elbow is very thin so there is almost nothing beween your humerus and the skin. Nature has inexplicably decided to run some nerves through this almost unpadded area so any impact will resonate through more than one nerve, thus giving you not only pain but rather different pain from most other impact pains.
It's one of many poorly laid out regions of our bodies that we just have to live with. (stuff that in your pipes and smoke it you dumb "intelligent design" morons)
i don't think its a bone. it's a nerve, idk. lol, i tried! haha
Does it? I didn't feel it any different. Maybe stupid but I haven't.
Funny you should ask that.
because its not a bone its a nerve
Because the nerve is very close to the skin surface
