How can I keep from falling asleep in class?

I'm in the military and it amazes me how easily I fall asleep during classes. I never had trouble falling asleep in high school. But for some reason, I have to fight so hard to not fall asleep. I know it's not because I'm actually tired because if my sergeant sees me nodding off, I get embarrased and suddenly i'm fully alert. It's all in the mind I'm sure but how do you battle that! I yell at myself in my head to stay awake and I can't! Even when I stand up, sometimes I fight to not fall over!

Answer:
If this is something that didn't happen before you need to look at what has changed in your life.

Do you eat a good breakfast?
Do you get enough protein?
Are you on medication?
Do you get quality sleep?
Are you stressed or worried?
Is the bed uncomfortable?
Do you have to share a room?
You might be bored and wishing you were elsewhere.
Is there enough air (I mean, are you in a stuffy environment, with not enough oxygen).

If none of this helps - go get a medical check-up.
You need a medical check up
you need to go to bed earlier
You're either not getting enough sleep, or you're narcoleptic.
Sounds like you need more sleep
put thumb tacs on your desk with the needles facing upwards. maybe you will think twice about going to sleep...
Get a good night's sleep. Have a protein snack before class to pep you up. Stay active in class - ask and answer questions.
