Injury while running still giving me pain?
I felt it niggling one day while out running so had a break for a few days when I went out again after only 5 minutes I practically collapsed! and had to get my husband to come pick me up in the car as I couldn't even walk on it.
I rested for 5 weeks no excercise at all, just the usual everyday getting around. I also practise Yoga and eased myself back into exercise with gentel yoga practise. I have now started working out to DVD's (Davina's power of 3 and Nell McAndrew's Ultimate workout) and OW! I'm in pain again.
The muscle is a little tender to touch but it feels really deep inside the tissue (if that makes sense) right near the bone. It is a little uncomfortable to walk but not what I would call painfull but if I run on it or jump it really hurts.
What have I done? Why after 5 weeks rest is it still hurting!
Answer:
That sounds like it could be and illiotibial band problem or IT band issue. The IT band runs from your hip all the way to your knee and is commonly irritated by runners. It always require some rest but if you've taken 5 weeks off it could be something else. I can suggest a stretch to work the IT band...stand facing away from something at knee heighth and knee length (such as a bed). Take the leg opposite the one that hurts and put your foot on the bed. Rest your ankle on the edge of the bed and then bring both knees together. One should be on the bed and one flat on the floor so you're standing on one leg. As your knees are touching, tighten your butt and stomach muscles and lean forward very very slightly maybe 5 degrees. You should feel this stretch the IT band on the straight leg. If doing this doesn't stretch the muscle that is sore, then it probably isn't an IT problem.
You could have a torn ligament or something that may never completely heal on it's own or that may need surgery. I'd consult your doctor, he may suggest physical therapy to work on specifically conditioning that certain area.
If it is still bothering you after 5 weeks I would consult a Doctor who knows what it could be that is bothering you. Good luck
5 weeks isn't a long time for a torn tendon to heal. I suggest you give it more time. Then see a professional trainer for an assessment. It should only cost £25. You may be given advice to prevent it happening again.
it sounds like a pinch nerve from this point of read your question. When you were out ranning you could have step on an uneven surface or even a rock with that leg which jagged your muscle all the way up your leg and which cause you to use your hip as a brace to stop from falling before it was going to happen. You had your mind set on running and your body pull it self to keep up with your mind..try a pain pill and one of the heat pad things for a while. You also should check with a doctor for xray.
You have a very common runner's repetitive strain.
You will need to do stretches for at least 30 second per stretch.
You will also need to not run for about 3 weeks and do the stretches everday. Whilst you aren't running, do gentle weight training to build up the muscles on your legs.
There is a band that runs along the outside of your hip from the pelvic bone to the outer part of the knee. This is being strained and the muscles need to be built up to take the stress of the running.
It will heal but remember. Build up the muscle (gently). Stretch the muscles and when you return to running. Start gently and slowly.
If you're in London, you might want to try the London Marathon shop where they will have some tips and possibly contact details for advice and physio.
Don't worry, this type of strain is very common. It's called "Runner's hip".
Why would you ask this question on here? Just go to a GP and ask somebody who is qualified. Not a group of people who could tell you anything
Good Luck
