How to hit bongos right?

I've just started playing bongos, after playing regular drums for 3 years just as a side thing, and i kind of hit the edge of the head for a high pitched noise. I use the middle of my fingers to make it louder (like the underside of where the middle joints of my fingers are) it usually hurts after I play a while, but i figure thats normal as im just starting. Am I doing something wrong that could cause damadge to my fingers?

Answer:
It will take getting used to as far as joint pain and soreness. The technique does involve using more or less of your finger across the rim in order to produce a dynamic sound. Watch players such as Giovanni Hidalgo or Poncho Sanchez, they have great technique and I am sure they can play for hours at a time.
