Diabetes question?
Answer:
I can see why you're freaked out but don't worry. Doctors are really getting strict about catching people early who have BSL's (blood sugar levels) that exceed 100 on a fasting blood test. I assume you fasted before this test result, right? The main things with diabetes is to find out what causes YOUR particular sugar levels to rise too much. Take it from me: buy a glucose monitor (super cheap at Walmart) and start monitoring your BSLs. Take a level before you eat a meal - then about 2 hours later. This will teach you which foods you react more to. Some diabetics REALLY get elevated BSLs after eating carbs like bread, rice, potatoes, etc. Start watching your portions and you'll be able to avoid getting diabetes. The new monitors. incidentally, use a fine needle (quite painless) and you can do it on your forearm for testing. The test strips are cheapest at Walmart or Costco her on CA. Check around and good luck!
There is a good possiblity that you will be able to fix this with proper diet and exercise. Don't worry and take care of yourself
Chill.104 is in the normal range. If you are overweight and your family shows a history of diabetes then you are seriously in the high risk category. The normal range is 70-120. Relax, maybe someone at the MD's office wanted to scare you or something. I could almost promise that you will get diabetes though if you do not lose weight. Please continue to try to lowere your weight, it could save your life! Good luck!
i've had diabetes for almost 12 years. 104 is actually a great blood sugar. it's a little higher than some non-diabetics, but it DOES NOT mean that you will get diabetes. did you maybe eat pizza the night before? or just get done eating a meal? It could've been slightly elevated for any number of reasons... including stress. Stress is a big cause of higher blood sugars. Rest easy for now... just continue to take good care of yourself. You may eventually get diabetes, but there's a good chance you will not. good luck!
my grandmother had diabetes
Up until last year... a blood sugar level above 135 was considered diabetic. Now the level is 120, I believe.
Given your comment, I'm guessing that was a fasting blood sugar level? Did you fast and have NOTHING to eat or drink prior to the testing? If you cheated... even with milk or breads, it will affect your reading.
Relax. Having diabetes is not the end of the world. Having diabetes does not mean that you need to start taking insulin shots either. Many cases are controlled for years with oral medications.
However, poor eating habits combined with lack of exercise will ensure you follow in your ancestral footsteps. Take this as a wake up call to find out about the 'glycemic index' of all foods you're eating. Many books, many websites to learn from out there.
My diabetes came after most of my pancreas was surgically removed (beat the alternative!). I avoid 'white' colored foods: bread, potatoes, pasta, cakes, cookies, beer, wine, etc. I take a few minutes out of my work day to walk the stairways at the office. Just 15-30 minutes a day makes a real difference in my blood sugar level.
My blood sugar level rises over night. This is generally when your liver is busy converting fat to sugar... If you're worried, buy a blood glucose monitor. Test yourself 2-3X per day and plot the results. Watch your blood sugar rise after you eat and then see how long it takes to come back to your 'normal' level. Normal is different for each person...but generally hovers between 88-102.
good luck.
ps. I don't consider a fasting 104 to be dangerously HIGH. Talk with your doctor. Don't overreact :-)
In this area of the country, you are not prediabetic until you hit 120. But if you watch your diet, count carbs and calories then you can avoid it. With that strong family history, you may end up with it later in life but you can avoid it for now. dlife.com has lots of information that you can find about diabetes. Please check it out and watch what you eat.
I'm not your doctor, but it sounds a little strict to me. If he wants you to be careful, then he should just say that, and cut out the guilt trip for your. Being 30, you know what to do and when to do it. You have history that you don't want to repeat, so watch your foods, keep your carbs and fats within range, and keep exercising. With a 104 glucose level, I'd try not to worry too much, but it is something, considering your family's history, that you have to keep in your mind.
