Hi there,
Hypertension is present when the blood pressure is raised above the normal range. What is the normal range for diabetics? The American Diabetes Association has given the target blood pressure for diabetics as 130/80 mmHg. You'll hear these numbers said as "130 over 80". This target is a little lower than the one for the normal population because it is important for diabetics not to have high blood pressure.
The traditional view is to regard high blood pressure as a specific disease but there is a problem with this. First, they say that the normal limits are ill-defined and secondly, despite lots of research, no specific cause has been detected in the majority of the cases.
The level of blood pressure in the population covers a wide range and also the average level rises slowly with age. In all individuals, it varies from time to time being affected by such emotions as anxiety and fear, physical exercise, smoking and other factors. And it falls during normal sleep.
What your friend should be concerned about is to get the blood pressure checked every time you visit the doctor, at least two or four times a year. Better still, take your blood presure at your local drug store. Drug stores usually have the equipment so anybody can check his own blood pressure.
They will show you how to do it the first time you are there. This is the only way you will find out if you have high blood pressure because it is a silent problem - you won't know it unless your health care provider checks your blood pressure. And then in between times, you have to keep track of it by going to the drugstore and keeping a record of your readings to show your doctor on your next visit. He will be impressed that you took them yourself.
What treatments are recommended? Both lifestyle changes and medication will help control blood pressure. By life changes, I mean make wise food choices, lose weight, be physically active, be careful with alcohol and quit smoking.
