I have to do a 24 hr urine test, to test the protien in my urine. What does that mean?
Answer:
I had to do that after my daughter was born also.
During my pregnancy with her, my blood pressure started to rise and also the protein count in my urine had started to increase. They did the 24 hour test after I delivered her to make sure that the levels were starting to go back down.
I suspect that it probably the same reason they are ordering the test for you, since you just recently delivered a baby also. To make sure that the things that were happening to your body while you were pregnant are starting to go back to normal now that you delivered.
A protein test is a way for them to check your kidney function.

It's just to make sure that your kidneys are fine. You're doctor might saw something like increased protein on your previous urinalysis. Maybe he just wants to make sure it's nothing. Did you have a C section?
The kidneys keep protein from entering the urine but sometimes, especially during and after pregnancy (since pregnancy is hard on the kidneys). If there's too much proteins then that might be a sign of kidney disease or lack of kidney function. They're just making sure that everything is fine and dandy with you and its very common to have this done now days. :)
Its a test to make sure that your kidneys are working properly.
Did you have pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH)? Was your blood pressure high when you were in labor? Did your OB/GYN want you to do this? If so, your doctor might just be making sure that it is going away like it normally does.
A lot of times when a woman has PIH, her kidneys will dump too much protein into the urine. It normally corrects itself within a few weeks of delivering the baby.
I'm an OB/GYN nurse and I don't remember how it is used for other things except that basically it sees if your kidneys are working right. (Just make sure you keep your bucket in ice).
