Why does a sunburn itch?

Have been at the Missouri River for 5 days...and I got a little sunburn. But first it itches really bad and then it just burns! Why is this?

Answer:
when you got burnt you damaged the skin. when cells are damaged they release chemicals that signal to white blood cells to attend and minimise infection and clean up the mess. these cells then signal for new skin cells to be created(more than usual) and for capillaries to made and anything that was damaged/destroyed.

one of the chemicals released at most stages of the repair process is histamine which is strongly linked with allergies. without it though so many things in our body wouldn't function properly. it itchs because it has started healing.
You got a burn and it is healing don't scratch at it, use aloe Vera jell or other soothing cream,
