My dog has have a lump on his side for nine years now and as it first developed i have it checked out, come to find out it was a fatty tumor. Did they bear a biopsy to see if it is anything serious? If not ask them to. I know how you feel. My pets are my four legged, or feathered children. I would pay packet whatever I needed to.

It may be a benign tumor or a bit of scar tissue. If it is contained by the skin (does it move around whsome en you press on it?) then the doctor should be capable of take some sort of biopsy (punch or fine-needle aspirate) of it to try to find out what it is.
If it is below the skin, there's no opening to biopsy it without surgery. The exceptionally best thing to do to be paid sure that it is not cancer, is to have the lump removed, and sent to a lab for histology (where they study the tissues). Different veterinarians surrounded by your area may enjoy different prices for the surgery. Keep in mind that any vet will want to examine your dog before operating.
PS. I saw a dog once that started out have a golf ball-sized lump on her side, and ended up have a 5-pound splenic tumor removed from her a few years later. I'm not impressed next to the apparent deficiency of concern your vet had for this lump.
