Do you burn the same amount of calories if....?

You swim all at once or in small steps.

I work day camp and we take our kids to the pool 3 times a week. I have been swimming laps while we are there, but I can only swim one lap at a time because I am also playing with the kids. Will I burn as many calories swimming this way as I would if I just swam the laps without stopping?
If I am not burning the same amount of calories, am I still getting good exercise that will help me stay fit?

Thanks for the help :-)

Answer:
hard to say .. You need to get your heart rate up a little to burn calories but If your still playing with the kids your heart rate is still up some.
You may be burning more this way b/c if you do one lap at a time you are not tiring out and each lap your probably giving it all you got.
Either way-just keep it up, it helps and is good for you
im not sure but your swimming and thats better than not swimming at all!
:)
you should burn the same ammount of calories per lap, but maybe you could get all the kids to do laps with you. you will all get a good workout.
The study in the link below compared multiple short workouts compared to one long workout and found they are both the same in ability to burn calories and help lose or maintain weight.

Congrats on being more active and keep up the good work!
you should swimm regular in a time period for burning calories..
well as an educated guess, i would figure doing it all at once burns more because your heart is working harder with no rest.

buuut i read that exercising several times throughout the day actually is better than one big one. so i guess either way you're on the right track! it doesn't really matter taking in account both sides of the argument. so you're fine. :]
The key element is intensity. If your huffing and puffing when you finish a lap you're probably on the right track. If not you need to swim longer or harder. Swimming is horribly anaerobic by the way.
probably not quite as many, bcuz if you swim w/o stopping you get a better cardio workout. but it's still good excersise. good work!
