When buying food in Europe, how do I know how many calories are in the item?

If the box says 86 calories, is it the same as it would be in American standards...or do they use a different system to figure out calories ?

Answer:
It is the same.

Most packaged foods have calorie, fat, sugar, salt etc info printed on the labels.
no, I'm pretty sure a calorie is a calorie ... am I wrong?
Just do as Europeans do,...look at what it says on the packet.
Just because the US is way behind Europe on these things doesn't mean you can't catch up. I know it must be a chore to have to do this, and sad that American standards are so poor, but that's why we aren't obese and "duh!" here...and why we don't waddle around looking like bloated ducks.

P.S. Click on "calorie" in Wikipedia,.it's a French word.
