I had a back tooth removed...?

a week ago. I am still in a lot of pain and have had a course of antibiotics since as there was an infection. I have rung the dentist and she said because it was a difficult extraction (40 mins to remove) it will be painful for a while. I'm at my wits end and full up with painkillers! Anyone else experienced this and does age make a difference to the healing time?

Answer:
I had this when I had my wisdom teeth removed and it does take a long time to get better if an infection has set in. If you are still in a lot of pain (like if it hasn't lessened at all) then you might need a different course of antibiotics. If your dentist is unwilling to see you then you could go to your GP and see if they can help.
I had the same as it was difficult to remove...yes it takes ages to heal and hurts.
Stick with it...rinse with salt water several times per day that helped it heal faster.
I am 33 and when I had back wisdom out it hurt like hell for two weeks, then because those nice people at the NHS had left bone fragments in there it got infected and exploded for another two weeks so i feel your pain.

I was lucky in that a friend was on strong prescription painkillers so I borrowed some of those rather than the nurofen rubbish and so was ok .. but it still throbbed a lot!

Good luck with your recovery!
Hubby had the same thing, keep on the pain killers,
I had a back tooth removed and it seemed to take ages for the whole to heal up. the first few days, rinse gently with warm salt water, take parecetomol for pain relief if required.
The mouth does heal the quickest but be patient and brush teeth carefully making sure the extraction hole is always clear of old food.

Not be long before you can eat and brush with confidence
Hiya, i'm a dental nurse and we see this quite alot in difficult extraction as there is alot of bruising as well as the actual extraction site. I would recommend going back to your dentist and asking for some more antibiotics. They might do an x-ray to as sometimes very small shards of bone break off when extracting which have to make its way to the surface. Also if your a smoker you may have something called 'dry socket' your dentist will be able to put a material into the wound to help with this problem. Pain after extraction should only be for a couple of days so please go back and see your dentist. Also try and gargle with hot salty water (as hot as you can stand) as this helps the blood flow and helps draw any infection to the surface.

Hope this helps
I had a back tooth removed last Thursday and it is fine. A little sore if eating but no need for pain killers. Insist your dentist sees you as there could be still fragments still in the gum. small ones will work their way out but there sounds something wrong to me. When I first went to the dentist they put me on antibiotics before I had the tooth removed so the injections would work and combat any infection already in the tooth. Don't take other peoples medication as this is dangerous. Each are prescribed with personal medical knowledge you could have a bad reaction...
i know the feeling you are not on your own, wisdom tooth extracted last friday, but took 10 mins to remove had to cut it in half to do the job, been in pain ever since sick of pain killers, so like one of your answers i am going to phone the dentist up 2morror (wed) to see what he suggests, i dont know if age slows down the healing time i am 67 and i hope the time doesent come to have them all out, good luck
i would keep bugging the dentist- i had all 4 wisdom teeth out at the same time and it didnt hurt that much at all so there must be something wrong.
yes age does make a difference dont worry it will heal in its good time
