I am Have medi-cal and they pay for root canals but don't allow any payment on the crown to finish the work.

It is like doing surgery opening the patient and fixing the problem but not being able to close the patient up. Why bother starting the root canal if you can't finish the job. The crown usually cost around $800 and up and most people on medi-cal can't afford that. So therefore you end up losing your teeth. More dental work and it is less cost effective.I really dont understand our government. We can spend millions of dollars in space but we can't help our people with health insurance. Why ?

Answer:
Ameriplan USA is only $11.95 a month and they save you 80% on all dental works..I did save like $400 dollars on a dental procedure..and even if you have dental insurance and there is a out of pocket cost you can show them the Ameriplan card and they will save you even more money.

In these cases it is better to get the tooth pulled. Root canals that are never crowned will become infected eventually, and the remaining tooth will invariably collapse.

However, even with insurance, most crowns are expensive. On most plans, crowns are still in the $400-$600 range. At this point it's becoming cheaper just to have the tooth pulled and get a bridge or an implant!

It seems that over the past ten years, dentists have been pushing root canals on everyone, even flatly refusing to do extractions, and not taking into consideration the needs of the patient. Many people can afford root canals (barely) but not the crowns. When the patient then loses the tooth five to ten years later, the dentists get paid yet again to have to extract the tooth and possibly do other work like drain abscesses that the broken roots caused.

If you can't afford to get a crown within 12 months after a root canal, definitely do not get the root canal.
Yes, the crowns are expensive. You may want to
take a look into a discount program to save 50%-60%.
The one I recommend for California is e-HealthPlus.

Agreed, the Medi-cal dental system is severely under funded.

If it is any consolation, you are not the only one
who has to go out and find their own
health solutions. Keep doing the great job!
I totally agree with you about the health insurance standards. I currently help people that can't afford insurance, which is about 70% of the U.S. I am a Healthcare Benefits Specialist. You may want to check out a supplemental PAO plan to help you save money on your future procedures. Research the site and see if this will be of use to you http://stacie.onesimplecard.com... . I hope this helps. Call me if you have any questions. 210-267-1936
