How to take a perfect dental x xay?
Answer:
Did you fall asleep during your radiology class or something? Techniques for taking proper PA and BW x-rays are drummed into each dental student's head especially during the last two years of dental school when working in the school clinics. A dental student is tested on X-ray technique all over the National Board exams which you had to pass to graduate from dental school, and again during your region's licensing exam.
Something's wrong here.
Request the OPG x ray.
Uh oh!!! If you don't know this, then something is wrong. Were you snoozing in class? lol Before you hang your shingle, make sure you know you know how to do what dentists do. Usually the dentist's assistant takes the x-rays before the dentist enters the room. If you aren't confident about doing what dentists do, your patients will pick up on it, which isn't a good thing. :(
Easiest way to do it is use a XCP...Pretty much lines it right up for you. but Being a new dentist you should know how to do that.
On taking bitewing xrays, always remember the flappy part of the xray packet removes to the left and goes in the holder with the flappy bit in the mouth next to the tongue, not the cheek, otherwise the xray wont work because the lead foil stops the travel of the ray.
Also, try and get the xray holders with the 'line up circle' that attaches to the holder, then you just line up the xray tube in the middle of the circle and HEY PRESTO, a perfect xray everytime.
Buy some RINNS. It is a brand of plastic and metal rings that help line up the xray tube with the flim. That is how they teach dental students in colleges now, by using Rinns to line up the shot.
Ummmmmm, how did you graduate?
ok, What's up with that where are your assistants?
Rinns work great but are confusing. This is what works for me.
place the bite tab as far forward as you can, have the patient "grit" their teeth this will indicate where the PID needs to go so you do not get a cone-cut. if you are taking adult bitewings angulation always on +10 place the pid straight on with no curvature. if it is a bi-cuspid shot curve ever so slightly. if it is a wisdom tooth shot do not curve you want to shoot it straight on with no curve. for pa's you can use the snap-a-ray mentally note where the xray is in a patient's mouth, line up the pid to the pt's cheek, place your hand to visualize and shoot.
