Interested in getting porcelain crowns from my dentist and was curious as to how long the whole process takes?
Answer:
my dentist fabricates them right there in her office she has the machine to make porceline crowns...she can do it in one office visit ...
It depends on the office. There are some lager practices that have machines (i.e. Sirac (sp?)) in their office and can make them the same day that you go in there. These are not porcelain crowns, they are ceramic.. but unless you are partial to porcelain you won't notice a difference (besides the price.. porcelain is more expensive). Other offices need to send their cases to a dental lab to have the crown made... this process, again, depends on the office for how long it will take. The office I worked at had a two week period in between the time that you were prepped for the crown and when the crown was actually placed. Of course they are not going to let you go around with nothing over the bare tooth for two weeks, so you will have a temporary crown on in the mean time.. but obviously it is not going to be as asthetically pleasing as the final prduct.
Two visits. Two weeks between each visit. On the first visit the dentist makes the necessary cast impressions of the crown and sends off the mold to the specialist that makes the porcelain crown. You are fitted with a temporary crown until your permanent one arrives. Then the second visit, where the dentist replaces the temp with the permanent one, takes less then a 1/2 hr.
