Diazepam before dental appointment?

I have some diazepam 5mg tablets left over from a back injury I had (I was prescribed them to help with the muscle spasm). I'm considering making an appointment to see a dentist but I have a LOT of anxiety about it, even about the initial consultation - particularly about finding out what will need to be done. In fact I think I'm more scared about the initial consultation than I am about potentially having work done....

I was just wondering, if I do make an appointment, could I take some diazepam before going to try and reduce my anxiety? If so, when would I need to take it for it to have an effect and what dose?

Answer:
You can take it. Do it about an hour before the appointment, on an emptty stomach. You also may want to have someone drive you.
Hope you had taken in the past to know how much sedation they give. If not, I will suggest just take half (2.5 mg) you need mild sedation, not to make u sleep.
NEVER take old prescription drugs. Diazepam is not Smarties or Dolly Mixtures - it's a very strong, addictive, drug! You need to learn to deal with anxiety in a different way, drugs don't cure it, they only mask the symptoms. Try learning some relaxation techniques, buy a book/tape or borrow from the library, find a class locally. Good luck with the dentist, learn to smile!
