A root canal is where the dentist drills a hole into the root or your tooth with the cavaity. I have to get a root canal done and i have done so much research on it. and yes i am scared. do u have to get one?.. if you do i know how you fill... :) oh and my mom says it does hurt. sorry and your dentist will tell you if you need it done. if you have sinsitivty on one side of your mouth or one tooth the ask a dentist.
The infected root of a tooth is drilled out and replaced with filling. Years and years ago they hurt a lot because of poor anesthesia. They are generally painless today. They certainly are better than having an abcessed tooth.

A root canal is when a dentist or endodontist drills into the tooth till they reach the nerve. And then file the nerve out with a set of different sized files. It can be painful if you do not have anesthetic. You can have just a shot or you can chose to be put under. ( By that I mean to sleep) But there is really no need. Once you get a shot it should not hurt...A dentist will tell you if you need one by the way.
I just had a root canal and it didn't really hurt much. The worst part is the grinding off of the tooth. They grind off the part of the tooth that's cavity and then they dig out the root of the tooth. They rinse it out with disinfectant. They put fake stuff on the rest of the tooth to make it look normal now. They wait two weeks then you go back and they put a post into your root and build the real tooth around it. Then if its really bad you have to get a crown which just goes over the tooth to keep it from breaking.
your dentist has to tell you if you need this. they are only done in the event of an abscessed tooth where the root of the tooth becomes infected and crreates a pocket of pus. it hurts like hell, often leading to severe swelling as far from the tooth as your ear and eye, depending. sounds bad, huh?
a root canal is what it sounds like. the dentist drills a very small canal in the back of the tooth, lengthwise to the end of the root. the toth can then drain, relieving the pressure and the swelling. there will usually be some antibiotics as well. when the abscess is gone the dr. will clean up and fill the canal.
it's not that complicated. and, believe me, if you have an abscess, you want the root canal! i've heard people say "oh no, a root canal" but there's no quicker relief. it's a godsend
