Which brush?
Answer:
Oral B Triumph. As a dental hygienist I have had both and still feel that the Oral B is a better choice. I also find that my patients tend to do better with the Oral B because it has a smaller brush head so you focus on just a few teeth at a time. I also had a patient that still had a ton of stain with the Sonicare and (unless he was grossly lying) his method of use was good and often. I spoke with their representative at a dental convention and they couldn't give me a good explanation. Lastly my Oral B is always reliable and long lasting, I end up getting a new model prior to it failing. One note though, charge it up fully and then put your charger base away since leaving it on the charger all of the time will waste the battery sooner. Good luck!

I would only get an electric toothbrush if you have plaque control problems, generalized gingivits, periodontitis, or difficulty with manual dexterity. With the proper technique (look up the Bass technique) and amount of time (at least 2 min 2 times per day) the cheap soft bristled toothbrush is about as effective. Even with an electric toothbrush technique is important.
I have an Oral-B Triumph which I use about twice a month. I do feel cleaner than usual immediately afterward. The brush feels much harsher than a normal toothbrush so I'm reluctant to use it more often. I think the Sonicare would be about the same. I wouldn't have an electric but I received one for free in dental school.
I have seen some reports that Sonicare is slightly more effective at reducing the amount of plaque but these kinds of tests aren't incredibly reliable. I believe the Oral-B is much cheaper.
discuss this with your dental hygienist - she will know which will work best for you and will demonstrate how to brush most effectively. Electric brushes are proven to be more effective than manual brushes. They aren't harsher - in fact when used properly are much better for your teeth and gums.
