Ahh! This is such an awesome question because so many people can benefit from the answer, rather their cholesterol is high or not.

First, it's important to understand that there are two ways your body gets cholesterol -- it makes some (how messed up is that!) and it absorbs it from food.

There are some AWESOME ways to lower cholesterol (that have been proven effective time and time again in medically supervised clinical trials) outside of prescription medicines.

The first is the least popular, but most effective. Diet. Not to say that we have to cut out cheesecake, cookies, and all of that "good" stuff, but we have to limit the cholesterol containing foods we eat, and make healtheir choices. Substitute chicken, turkey, or fish for beef -- substitute baked or grilled foods for fried . . . that's half of the battle.

In the form of herbs and vitamins, there are a couple of things that work amazingly well.

Garlic -- it may make your breath smell funky, so you'll get fewer kisses (unless you pop a mint or two) but garlic in higher doses can help to lower cholesterol -- I'd just get a supplement from the pharmacy, and take one each time I had a meal. It lowers cholesterol substantially.

Another easy helper is niacin -- it's a vitamin (B-something). There are actually several sub-parts to in . . . nicotinic acid, niacinamide .. . and it's one of those sub-parts, (niaciniamide) that is so effective at lowering cholesterol. You can get it separate from the other B-s by just getting a niacin (or flush-free niacin, so that your cheeks don't go red) I'd take it like the garlic -- it's water soluble . . . so your body doesn't store it -- whatever isn't used will be peed away.

Another great treatment is to increse (haha, you didn't think I'd tell you to eat more of something, did you?) your fiber (oh, now you see why . . . nobody likes fiber). You can use supplements such as metamucil or fibercon, or you could just start your day off with a bowl of oatmeal (I prefer a bit of peanut-butter, and brown sugar) . . . I don't do the milk, because of the cholesterol, instead I have some Orange Juice.

You can also cut back -- if you do whole milk, go to soy, 1%, or 2%. It'll take some time to adjust, but when you get your lab report with a smiley face because your cholesterol is amazingly low (I did) you'll be as pleased as punch!
Briefly, your diet should consist of mostly veggies ,fruits (5 servings each per day) very little lean meat and low fat cheese. Some seeds and nuts and low fat milk also helps. Water and exercises is also important .
Excellent question! The function and role of cholesterol is poorly understood. Statin drugs to lower cholesterol have severe adverse side effects, and besides, they treat the symptom and not the cause, so you are wise to look for natural alternatives. There is also substantial evidence that cholesterol is essential to the structure and function of all cells in the body. It helps to maintain the flexibility and permeability of cell membranes and is also a raw material for the fatty lubricants that help to keep the skin supple. Cholesterol is essential for the production of sex hormones, cortisol, vitamin D and bile salts. If you dont consume enough of it, your liver makes up the difference. So you see, your body needs it. There is NO actual evidence that high cholesterol leads to heart attacks. That is a myth.

What causes high cholesterol? Several possibilities: genetics; a diet high in animal fats; weight gain.

How to lower it without drugs?
- Weight loss is the biggest one. If you are overweight, you will lose 1 point of cholesterol for every pound lost. Weight loss alone can resolve this problem. Start walking!
- Diet. Our bodies need SOME animal fat, but limit protein to lean meats, and trim off all visible fat. No bacon, and avoid cheese too.
- Some foods can help lower cholesterol: garlic is iffy, but others include blueberries, almonds (20 is a serving), oatmeal, apples, beans, carrots, yogurt, barley and fiber. Stop at your natural foods store and pick up TRUE cinnamon capsules (from Ceylon - Now brand Cinnamon Bark in 600 mg. capsules is safe. Do NOT take large quantities of the cinnamon sold in supermarkets as it is not the true cinnamon and can be deadly in large doses) and a bottle of 1000 mg. Inositol & Choline (2 B vitamins that we don't get enough of).

Congratulations on the willingness to take charge of your health! Good luck and stay with the plan!
My husbands cholesterol was sky high we were able to lower it drastically naturally with two products Fresh Royal Jelly and Bee Pollen Pellets from beeroyalproducts.com and Red Yeast Rice capsules the Natrol brand from Vitamin Shoppe, the doctors could not even believe how quickly his numbers came down and have stayed down and he feels great.
Oatmeal every day...you'll be amazed in one month!

P.S. Hope you don't eat ice cream.
I have a friend that though he was doing all he could do to lower his cholesterol. Eating a mostly vegetarian diet and such then he attended a seminar about cutting out all animal fats and extracted oils. He did not think it would work but gave it a try. Kudos to him he lowered his cholesterol by 30 points doing this. Now the only fats in his diet come from whole foods like avacados and such. It's important to understand that cholesterol can be good for you. It is important for brain function and for your sex life.

A long time ago, eskimos had cholesterol readings of 300 to 500 without having heart attacks.

It's the ratio that counts, not the total number. You want to have a ratio of 4.0 or less. Divide your good cholesterol into the total cholesterol to establish your ratio.

Btw, your good cholesterol acts as an arterial scrubber...see what I mean about cholesterol...it's a good thing.

To lower your total while raising your good, take arginine or policosinol.

PS. A doctor I know says that statin drugs lower cholesterol and cause heart attacks!
