I subscribe to a women's magazine called "First". It just did an article on a GI Syndrome that they refered to as Leaky Gut Syndrome (LSG). I don't know if it is what your mom has or if its related at all, but I'd suggest getting a copy of it to have the whole article which includes some info on the syndrome as well as a sample & simple 7 day diet/detox plan. The doctor that contributed to this is Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D, medical director at Ultra Wellness Center in Lenox, MA and author of "the UltraSimple Diet" published by Pocket Books, 2007.
Here's some natural remedies that might help from the article, I suggest making sure that any remedy your mom uses, won't interfere with any medications or treatments she has to take, she should consult her doctor & pharmacist, as should anyone else:
But first here's what the article says is a contributor to LSG...which experts are finding that it effects more women than previously thought (The article doesn't mention men, so i don't know how this would relate to them)..."Increased exposure to unhealthy man-made trans fats, refined sugars, antibiotics, pain relievers and environmental toxins. Each of these factors, physically stressess the body's GI system, creating tiny preforations in the paper thin lining of the small intestine..." and "as a result, the body is unable to properly digest meals, and partially digested food particles 'Leak' out of the preforated gut. Then they make their way to the liver, where they trigger a massive inflammatory response that can hinder the function of virtually every organ system in the body."
"The body wide inflammation caused by LSG tricks the brain into craving carbs, stalls the liver's fat burning abilities and prevents the GI tract from producing mood-boosting chemicals." Symptoms include: "Chronic abdominal pain, gas, constipation and/or bloat, heartburn, bad breath, headaches or joint pain, frequent colds or sinus problems, acne or premature aging skin, mood swings, anxiety or the blues, under-eye circles or bags, insomnia, strong food cravings or nightime eating jags."
okay...now, for real this time, are the remedies from the article:

The article goes on to say that the "top sources" for the enzyme are: "PAPAYA & PINEAPPLE."
PAPAYA: "Within 30 minutes of eating 1/2 cup, digestion improves markedly, and the benefits last for hours, UK studies suggest. Plus, the sweet treat's protein-digesting enzymes (Papain, Chymopapain and Papaya Protein-Phase III) destroy viruses and bacteria before they have a chance to damage and inflame the GI Tract lining."
PINEAPPLE: "The fresh fruit contains hundreds of anti-inflammatory enzymes that triple the body's level of infection-fighting white blood cells and help reverse LGS. And eating just 1/2 cup daily improves the digestive system's ability to process foods and fluid so dramatically, bloat drops significantly in several days."
the article also mentions for constipation..a "SENNA LAXATIVE, which will ease constipation within 12 hours...one to try is Rite-Aid Senna, ($6.00 for 200 tablets at Drugstore.com or call 800-Drugstore). Take 2 Tablets daily at Bedtime."
for bad breath or body odor:

There is a seven day detox diet plan, explained in the article as well as testimonials from several woman, but i left it out, due to the fact that my post was already long enough...like i said in the beginning, its just a sample plan. its very simple. its supposed to be for 7 days only, i guess. and it doesn't seem to require any strange food items (except for maybe Rice protein Powder). Anyone can easily get the magazine if they are interested in it further. I can not vouch for the effectiveness, since i have not followed the article's advice on my own yet. I do plan on starting as soon as i hit the grocery store and get what i need. I myself feel i either have LSG or a thyroid problem, sinces symptoms are very similar...but have not been diagnosed with either.still going through rigorous doctor tests!!
I think all the remedies listed above would benefit anyone, not jsut someone with LSG...just check with your doctor first so it doesn't alter any treatments/medications you might be on.

Ginger can be helpful for digestive problems of many sorts. Fresh ginger or dried are both good. They can be taken as tea when boiled with some honey and/or lemon. Check flax seeds, too. Ground flax seeds are full of fiber and ligans.
The above answer is awesome, and I just have some additions to that.
A Probiotic that is super strong, like 25-50 billion CFU's, and of course viable and from a reputable company.
I like Fennel for digestion. It helps with "motility" and soothes the GI. You probably have it in your spice rack. Steep about a teaspoon in water (not microwaved) and drink as a tea.
And also digestive enzymes. Apple cider vinegar and honey in warm water sipped during a meal can be very helpful for digestion.
An optional item would be chlorophyll. Any green powder, like barley grass, alfalfa, or chlorella could be helpful as well.
The book The Maker's Diet by Jordan S. Rubin might help. It is full of suggestions on how to restore the GI and has a plethora of suggested links and recipes. Rubin nearly died of Crohns Disease. Very educational. Good luck and GOD Bless
