I think it's because men are expected to be virile, so it have become a big thing, inquiring for stuff that will increase virility.
Incidentally, I came across ONE instance of some traditional Asian contraceptive: papaya (pawpaw) seed supposedly decrease a man's sperm count.
But overall, the randier the man, the "bigger" he is. More children = more successful. It turns me past its sell-by date, quite frankly.

considering in attendance is no FDA restrictions on supliments, many of these "afrodesicacs" can miss regulations and be sold anywere with any claim minus proof and the US market is probably a big share of thier income from these types of things
the thought of ingestion or taking something that is undercooked and or exotic can stimulate ones imagination and the aphrodesiac effect can be misinterpreted and unjustly attributed to the actual substance
the power of the imagination is what various of these aphrodesiacs rely upon, if you can get someone to believe it will work, consequently it just may
